Elizabeth Prendergast Gunther Nursing Scholarship

Elizabeth Prendergast Gunther. born March 9, 1883 in Chicago of Irish ancestry, was orphaned at the young age of 10. Supporting herself and living alone in a boarding house, she worked twelve hour days in a factory earning enough money to later take in her younger brother and care for him as well.
Despite the fact that she faced many adversities and hardships in her life, she was a strong and independent woman. Marrying in her late twenties at a time when most women married in their teens, she later served as a positive example to her daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, and great-great granddaughter. Her great granddaughter and great-great granddaughter are both U. T. Martin graduates.
Elizabeth led what many would call an "ordinary life" spending her days working hard in factories, school bakeries, and owning a floral shop. Her family and community often depended on her practical knowledge as she used many reliable home remedies to nurse them back to good health.
Because she was forced to support herself at such a young age, she had very limited formal education. However, she became very well-read and self-educated. She was an extraordinarly resilient, determined, focused, kind and loving woman who had a great positive impact on her family.
The Elizabeth Prendergast Gunther Nursing Scholarship is named in her honor and memory to pay tribute to not just her ordinary life, but to her extraordinary impact and positive influence on so many.

Not everyone has the heart and soul to be a nurse. Merlyn and Wendy had that gentle spirit along with a strong work ethic.
Merlyn Virginia Borden had a life-long dream to be a nurse. Once her two children (Wendy and Milo) were grown and on their own she was able to go back to school. She became an LPN after graduating in 1973 from the Kokomo School of Practical Nursing In Indiana. Following three years of working at the nearby doctor's office, Merlyn worked at Grissom Air Force Base until her retirement in 1983. Evidently her practical skills were quite good since at Grissom, in addition to her nursing duties, she was assigned to teach other nurses the nuances of dealing with patients.
Merlyn moved to Martin, Tennessee in 2002 and almost immediately became known as a person who would lend a helping hand. She volunteered weekly at We Care Ministries until her health would no longer permit that type of work.
Wendy Lynn Borden graduated in 1977 from the Lutheran School of Nursing at Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1985 she received her BSN from Montana State University. From 1977 through 1980, Wendy worked at Dukes Hospital in Peru, Indiana and from 1981 through 1982 she worked at the Veterans Hospital in Marion, Illinois. Upon receiving her BSN, Wendy moved to Olympia, Washington to work at St. Peter Hospital specializing in psychiatric care. She gained the respect of her peers and was highly regarded by them.
The west was a good location for Wendy since she was an enthusiastic participant in outdoor activities. She enjoyed snow camping and was a member of the Sierra Club. In addition to her work and recreational endeavors, Wendy was a Big Sister for as long as she was able.
This nursing scholarship has been given in memory of Merlyn and Wendy with the hope that the recipients will be able to continue on the path of the best that the lives of Merlyn Virginia Borden and Wendy Lynn Borden exemplified.

Russell married the former Mary Erwin in 1955; they had four children: Stephen McConnell; Lenore McConnell Christiansen; Judith McConnell Steffen; and Emily McConnell Jenkins.
He received a scholarship to Northwestern University from Lane Technical High School in Chicago. He earned most of credits at Northwestern for a B.A. in Music Education but graduated from Alaska Methodist University (now Alaska Pacific) while serving in the military.
Russell was first inducted in the U.S. Army in July, 1953. He left the service but re-enlisted in 1959 with the stipulation that he would play the French horn in an army band. He also played the trumpet and saxophone. He completed Warrent Officer Training in 1960 and was assigned as the commander of the 328th Army Band at Brooklyn Army Terminal in New York where he remained for almost five years. Russell also had assignments in Alaska, Kentucky, Texas, Alabama, Indiana as well as Korea and two locations in Germany. He retired from the military May 31, 1987.
The McConnells bought property in Martin, Tennessee and planned to move there in the mid-l 970s. However, promotions and training caused a delay in his retirement and he served 34 years of active service. The McConnells did then move to Martin. Mary worked for UT Martin's Division of Fine and Performing Arts while Russell and Emily attended college there.
Russell was very active in the community, his church and the region. The following are a few of his involvements: Choir Director, First Methodist Church, Martin; Paducah Symphony Orchestra; UT Martin French Hom Ensemble; American Legion; Association of Retired Military Musicians; Masonic Lodge; and Tennessee Defense Force. He had Mary promise that his body would be donated for research because "after all, I won't have any use for it when I'm gone." His body was transported to UT Memphis for use by instructors and medical students. In 1997, his remains will be taken for burial to Arlington Cemetary in Arlington, Virginia.
Mary and their children describe him as one who was always learning. He could not abide injustice, ignorance, laziness. He was adventurous and would not be told "It can't be done." He was a "froggy daddy" who tickled and sang silly songs to his children. He would "steal" food from their plates and defeat them at Trivial Pursuit. His travels brought home dolls in native costume for hs wife. He wanted to inspire people to attain knowledge, to engage in active reasoning and to reach for excellence.
In celebration of his life, Mary McConnell has established the Russell Vay McConnell Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The scholarship will be awarded to the most talented and deserving French horn student.

Tom came to UT Milan 20 years earlier to build and manage the new UT station, and he developed it into a showplace of Tennessee while pioneering the concept of No-Till farming--which has grown into a world practice. An avid collector of agricultural artifacts, he chartered two non-profit organizations in West Tennessee. The West Tennessee Agricultural Museum Association and the Antique Engine Association of West Tennessee. He personally collected more than 20,000 antique farm equipment items, large and small to exhibit in a dream museum someday at Milan.
A UT graduate with B.S. and M.S. degrees in agriculture, he won many honors as the county agent in Obion County, and even more at Milan. He was the Progressive Farmer's "Man of the Year" in 1982 and the recipient of many awards from soil conservation groups. He was chosen as Paul Harris Fellow by the Milan Rotary Club and was active in church and community activities.
At Tom's death, The Milan Mirror Exchange launched a memorial drive that would someday honor the outstanding leader. Initially, the fund grew to $10,000 and has been drawing interest in a local bank. In May 1996, the fund reached $15,000 to allow an endowment scholarship for Tom at UT Martin. The first scholarship will be awarded in 1997 in his honor on behalf of the West Tennessee Agricultural Museum Association.
